COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Classics at Brock University offers students the flexibility to pursue advanced studies through two academic pathways: Scheme A (course work and major research paper) and Scheme B (course work and thesis), across three specialization options—Critical Ancient Studies, Art and Archaeology, and Text and Culture. Scheme A typically takes five terms and includes the CLAS 5P90 major research paper, a pro-seminar, language and literature courses (GREE/LATI), and a range of elective credits. Scheme B, generally completed in six terms, involves completing CLAS 5F90 (MA Research and Thesis) and additional graduate-level course work. Each specialization emphasizes specific academic foci: Critical Ancient Studies centers on language, literature, and historical analysis; Art and Archaeology emphasizes visual and material culture, promoting archaeological fieldwork; and Text and Culture focuses on interpretation of texts within their cultural contexts. All students must also complete a modern language requirement—either by passing a reading exam in French, German, or Italian or achieving a minimum 75% in an introductory university-level language course. The program promotes interdisciplinary study and academic rigor while allowing for a tailored graduate experience that prepares students for further study or careers in education, heritage, or related cultural sectors.
