COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Applied Health Sciences with a specialization in Recreation, Sport and Community at Brock University offers an interdisciplinary academic experience that explores the social, cultural, and policy dimensions of sport, recreation, and community engagement. Students must complete AHSC 5N01 – Current Issues in Applied Health Sciences Research in their first year and AHSC 5F90 – MA/MSc Research and Thesis, which involves conducting an original research project under faculty supervision. A key requirement of this specialization is AHSC 5P30 – Recreation, Sport and Community, a course that critically examines the role of recreation and sport in shaping community life, inclusion, and well-being. In addition, students select one 0.5-credit research methods course from a list that includes both qualitative and quantitative options such as AHSC 5P07, 5P17, 5P27, 5P37, 5P38, 5P47, or 5P57, providing essential methodological training for thesis research. To further develop their academic focus, students complete two electives at the 5PXX level or above, with the option of including either a Directed Study (AHSC 5P60) or Directed Reading (AHSC 5P61). This specialization prepares students for doctoral studies or careers in community development, sport and recreation leadership, policy analysis, and related sectors by fostering critical thinking, research skills, and applied knowledge in socially relevant contexts.
