COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts program in Teaching English as a Second or Subsequent Language offers a structured curriculum centered around core and additional courses tailored to develop advanced expertise in applied linguistics and language teaching. The core courses include LING 5P07, focusing on Second Language Acquisition Theory and Research, and LING 5P85, which covers Research Issues and Methodology in Second Language Acquisition. Beyond these, students select a minimum of two additional graduate-level courses in consultation with their supervisor and the Graduate Program Director, depending on course availability. These additional courses encompass a broad range of applied linguistics topics such as Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning (LING 5P00), Sociolinguistics Applied to Language Teaching and Learning (LING 5P01), and pedagogical skills including grammar, oral/aural, reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction (LING 5P02 to LING 5P08). Students may also choose Independent Study (LING 5P10) or engage with Special Topics in Applied Linguistics (LING 5V60-5V69) to tailor their learning to specific interests. The program culminates in the MA Research and Thesis (LING 5F90), where students conduct original research that contributes to the field of second language acquisition and teaching. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with the theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical insights necessary to excel in teaching English to diverse learners.
