COURSE CURRICULUM

A (TESL) in the Master of Arts program requires students to complete two core courses, a minimum of two additional courses, and an MA thesis. The core courses are LING 5P07, which focuses on Second Language Acquisition Theory and Research, and LING 5P85, covering Research Issues and Methodology in Second Language Acquisition. Students select at least two additional courses in consultation with their supervisor and the Graduate Program Director, based on availability. These additional courses offer a wide range of applied linguistics topics, including Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning (LING 5P00), Sociolinguistics Applied to Language Teaching and Learning (LING 5P01), Pedagogical Grammar (LING 5P02), Oral/Aural Skills (LING 5P03), Reading (LING 5P04), Writing (LING 5P05), and Vocabulary (LING 5P08). Options also include Independent Study (LING 5P10) and Special Topics in Applied Linguistics (LING 5V60-5V69), allowing students to tailor their learning experience to their interests. The program culminates in the MA Research and Thesis course (LING 5F90), where students conduct original research under faculty supervision. This scheme combines rigorous coursework with intensive research, preparing graduates for advanced roles in teaching English as a second language or for further academic pursuits.
