COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences with a Concentration in Geology offers a comprehensive and rigorous exploration of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that shape the Earth. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in Earth Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Statistics, complemented by a Humanities or Social Sciences context credit. The second year introduces key geological concepts such as sedimentology, mineralogy, and plate tectonics, with laboratory and field components. Students also take introductory physics to support their understanding of geophysical processes. In Year 3, the program advances into specialized topics including structural geology, stratigraphy, petrology, geochemistry, and glacial geology, alongside an intensive field school (ERSC 3P99) that offers hands-on experience in geological mapping and analysis. The final year focuses on deepening knowledge through advanced electives in geology, allowing students to tailor their learning to areas of interest such as volcanology, paleontology, or environmental geoscience. This program is designed to meet the academic requirements for registration as a geoscientist-in-training, a key step toward the Professional Geoscientist (PGeo) designation. Graduates are equipped for careers in resource exploration, environmental consulting, geotechnical engineering, and research, with opportunities for work both in Canada and internationally.
