COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology Honours BSc program provides a comprehensive education in biological sciences, chemistry, and biochemistry with a focus on the industrial and practical applications of living organisms. In the first year, students complete foundational courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and humanities or social sciences, establishing a broad scientific base. The second year introduces core biotechnology topics such as molecular biology, cell biology, organic chemistry, and specialized courses like Introduction to Biotechnology and Biophysical Chemistry, along with electives in evolution, microbiology, and ecology. In the third year, students delve deeper into bioreactor processes, molecular genetics, bio-organic chemistry or protein and nucleic acid chemistry, metabolic biochemistry, protein structure, and various chemistry electives, alongside options like applied microbiology and developmental biology. The final year emphasizes research with a required thesis and project, advanced courses in enzyme mechanisms, biophysical techniques, bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and specialized genetics courses covering bacterial, fungal, and human molecular genetics. Additional options in microbial pathogenesis and immunology allow students to tailor their studies toward emerging fields in biotechnology. This program equips graduates with theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills necessary for careers in biotechnology industries, research, and development, preparing them to contribute to innovations in medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and industrial biotechnology.
