COURSE CURRICULUM

The Primary/Junior program at Brock prepares candidates to teach Kindergarten through Grade 6, with an emphasis on developing expertise related to school curricula. Preference is given to applicants with a major in Child and Youth Studies or a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours), as well as those who have completed university-level half-credit courses in mathematics, science, or English prior to applying. Candidates are also encouraged to take courses in Canadian history, geography, the arts, and physical education to broaden their knowledge base. In the first year, students engage in foundational courses such as Teaching in the Ontario Context, Integrating Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Cognition and the Exceptional Learner, and core curriculum subjects including Social Studies, Language and Literacy, Science and Technology, and Mathematics. Practical experience begins early with practicum placements and courses like Teaching Digital Learners and The Arts in the Curriculum. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced literacy and mathematics courses, health and physical education pedagogy, and further practicum placements focused on professional collaborative communities. Students also study Professionalism and Law for Educators, Programming for Inclusive Classrooms, and Educational Inquiry, equipping them with the skills to foster inclusive, effective learning environments. This comprehensive program balances theory and hands-on practice to prepare skilled, knowledgeable educators.
