COURSE CURRICULUM

The Junior/Intermediate program at Brock certifies candidates to teach Grades 4 through 10, requiring them to identify one teachable subject with at least three credits, including one at the 2(alpha)00 level or above, typically from courses eligible for major programs. Specific guidelines apply to subjects such as Dramatic Arts, English, French, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Science, and Visual Arts, ensuring candidates meet discipline-specific credit requirements with an emphasis on practical and content-focused coursework. Preference is given to applicants with university-level half-credit courses in mathematics, science, or English, or equivalent community college/university courses. Candidates are also encouraged to broaden their knowledge through courses in Canadian history, geography, arts, and physical education. The program’s curriculum spans two years: Year 1 includes foundational courses like Teaching in the Ontario Context, Integrating Teaching and Assessment, Cognition and the Exceptional Learner, alongside core curriculum subjects such as Social Studies, Language and Literacy, Science and Technology, Mathematics, and Arts integration, complemented by practicum placements. Year 2 advances candidates’ skills with courses in Professional Collaborative Communities, advanced literacy and mathematics, Health and Physical Education pedagogy, and programming for inclusive classrooms, alongside additional practicum experiences. This structure balances theory, practical teaching, and subject mastery to prepare effective Junior/Intermediate educators.
