COURSE CURRICULUM

The Intermediate/Senior program certifies candidates to teach Grades 7 through 12, requiring them to select two teachable subjects, with at least five credits averaging 75 percent in the first subject and three credits averaging 70 percent in the second, both typically from major or minor program-eligible courses. Candidates must meet specific credit requirements for each subject, such as practical, creativity-based courses in Dramatic Arts, literature-focused credits in English, grammar and composition in French, Canadian geography for Geography, activity-based Physical Education courses, Canadian history for History, and subject-specific courses in Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and Visual Arts. Priority may be given to areas of high teacher demand, with some subjects offered selectively each year. The curriculum spans two years: Year 1 includes foundational courses on Professionalism, Law, Teaching Principles, Student Assessment, Cognition, ICT, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, alongside two credits in initial subject teaching courses. Year 2 advances learning with Professional Collaborative Communities, practicums, education inquiry, inclusive programming, Indigenous education, and one-credit advanced subject teaching courses, supplemented by special topics such as Middle School teaching or Environmental Education. This comprehensive program integrates theoretical knowledge, practical teaching experience, and specialized subject preparation to equip future educators for effective teaching at the secondary level.
