COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth and Planetary Science Communication program offers a comprehensive blend of geoscience and communication studies across four years, preparing students to effectively communicate complex scientific information. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as Planet Earth (solid and surface processes), introductory communication and media studies, professional communication, Indigenous studies, and either introductory chemistry or storytelling, along with a geography course exploring globalization, identity, or environmental vulnerability. Year 2 deepens scientific understanding with planetary science, climate crisis, and plate tectonics, while communication training advances through research methods, theory, and either organizational or media writing. Students also explore topics such as geospatial technologies, oceanography, and environmental geoscience. Year 3 focuses on applied skills with courses in mineralogy, science communication, and planetary science, alongside studies in audience engagement, public relations, and electives such as paleontology, GIS, or remote sensing. In Year 4, students complete an honours project and take courses in citizen science and advanced geoscience topics. A capstone communication elective allows exploration of specialized subjects like ecocinema, environmental media, data and society, or crisis communication. This interdisciplinary structure equips graduates with the scientific expertise and media proficiency needed for careers in science communication, environmental advocacy, public policy, or stakeholder engagement across various sectors.
