COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in leisure and health services. In the first year, foundational courses cover recreation and leisure studies, programming, leadership, human anatomy, psychology, and include sciences and humanities credits to build a strong base. The second year deepens knowledge with courses on research design, social psychology, therapeutic recreation for persons with disabilities, leisure education, lifespan development, and community studies, alongside elective credits. The third year focuses on sociological aspects of leisure, program planning, assessment, quantitative and qualitative research methods, abnormal psychology, and additional therapeutic recreation topics, supplemented by electives. In the final year, students complete an intensive internship, advanced therapeutic recreation methods, and elective courses, with opportunities for honours research projects, fieldwork, program evaluation, and specialized topics such as behavioural health, physical rehabilitation, and facilitation techniques. This structured progression equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, culminating in a 560-hour internship that integrates classroom learning with real-world experience. The program prepares graduates for certification and professional roles in therapeutic recreation, fostering expertise in assessment, program design, and inclusive practices to support diverse populations in community and healthcare settings.
