COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation and Leisure Studies (BRLS) program at Brock’s Main Campus provides a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for dynamic careers in the field. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through courses like Introduction to Recreation and Leisure Studies, Recreation Programming, and Leadership in Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, complemented by humanities, sciences, and social sciences credits. Year 2 focuses on research and community engagement with courses such as Introduction to Research Design and Evaluation and The Social Psychology of Leisure and Recreation, along with electives and specialized topics like Therapeutic Recreation, Community Organizations, and Outdoor Recreation Theory. In Year 3, students deepen their understanding with courses on the sociological aspects of leisure, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and advanced recreation studies credits, alongside electives. The final year offers advanced coursework and practical experiences, including options for honours research projects, fieldwork in recreation and leisure services, and program evaluation, preparing students for leadership roles in diverse settings. Throughout the program, students develop critical skills in research, leadership, and program design, supported by experiential learning opportunities that foster real-world impact. This well-rounded approach equips graduates to contribute effectively to municipal recreation, non-profits, outdoor education, and other sectors, making meaningful contributions to community wellbeing and leisure innovation.
