COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Critical Criminology program provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum designed to explore the complex relationship between law, society, and justice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through courses in sociology and general humanities and sciences, alongside elective credits. The second year introduces critical criminological theories, sociological thinking, research methods, and specialized topics such as law and social justice and the sociology of criminal justice. Students also begin to explore Group A credits and elective courses to deepen their understanding. The third year emphasizes advanced sociological theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and offers a diverse selection of specialized criminology courses covering topics such as law and social regulation, abolition and the carceral state, criminal justice in the age of AI, state surveillance, youth culture and crime, gender and justice, and environmental criminology, among others. Electives and Group B credits further broaden student expertise. In the fourth year, students engage in service learning in community justice, advanced criminology courses, and elective credits, with opportunities to study topics like collaborative prison education, law and society, life after incarceration, and critical issues such as Black men and criminalization. The program equips students with theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical experience, preparing them for leadership roles in justice, policy, advocacy, and research.
