COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Art program at Brock University offers students a rich and diverse curriculum emphasizing hands-on, studio-based learning across various media including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, sound, and interdisciplinary practices. In Year 1, students build foundational skills with courses such as Introduction to Drawing, Figure Drawing, Digital Foundation, Studio Foundation, and courses in visual culture and art history, complemented by science and elective credits. Year 2 deepens studio skills through courses like Introduction to Sculpture, Painting Fundamentals, Photography, Digital Video, 3D Modeling, and Sound Design, alongside art history and visual culture electives. In Year 3, students continue to develop their artistic practice with advanced studio credits and electives, while also exploring specialized topics such as anatomical drawing. Year 4 focuses on advanced studio work and critical engagement with contemporary art through electives in areas like Socially Engaged Art, Appropriation in Art, and Forbidden Knowledge, Dangerous Art. This program fosters creative growth, critical thinking, and professional development through a blend of practical studio experience and theoretical study. The curriculum supports students in building a strong portfolio and prepares them for careers in the visual arts, as well as for further academic study, offering opportunities to engage with the arts community through exhibitions, workshops, and research.
