COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communication program at Brock University offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop students’ understanding of media systems, content, audiences, and policy. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through courses like Introduction to Communication and Media Studies and Introduction to Film Studies, along with context credits in Sciences and Social Sciences. In Year 2, the program emphasizes theory and methods with courses such as Research Methods in Communication and Culture, Media Industries, and Communication Theory. Students also explore specialized interests through options like Theories of Popular Culture, Film History, Visual Culture, Linguistics, and topics like The Information Society and Social Media. Year 3 focuses on deeper analytical and critical skills through Media Analysis, Audience Studies, and Communication and Media Policy, as well as focused studies in Television and Canadian media. In the final year, students further hone their expertise with upper-level electives and advanced courses in media theory, policy, and analysis. Throughout the program, students gain practical and research skills that prepare them for diverse careers in media, communications, policy, and cultural analysis. The program fosters critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning, equipping graduates to navigate and shape the rapidly evolving media landscape.
