The Italian Studies program offers a diverse range of courses designed to develop students’ language skills and deepen their understanding of Italian culture, literature, and society. Beginning with ITAL 1F00, students with no prior knowledge of Italian acquire foundational reading, writing, speaking, and grammar skills. Progressing to intermediate courses like ITAL 1F90 and ITAL 2P00, learners review grammar and practice oral and written communication while exploring cultural topics, including Italy’s cities and art. Specialized courses such as ITAL 3P93 focus on Dante’s *Inferno*, exploring its literary significance and artistic adaptations, while ITAL 2P92 delves into Renaissance art and architecture from critical perspectives, examining humanism and patronage. Other courses, like ITAL 3P02, explore contemporary cultural identity issues, including the presence of the African diaspora in Italy and the experiences of migrants and refugees. Additionally, courses like ITAL 1P96/2P96 and ITAL 2Q95 examine Italian society, culture, and the expression of gender and sexual diversity through literature, film, and activism. ITAL 2P98 focuses on the Italian-Canadian experience and Italy-Canada relations, addressing heritage, multiculturalism, and identity.
