COURSE CURRICULUM

The History of Art and Visual Culture program at Brock University offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum designed to develop students’ visual literacy, critical thinking, and understanding of art’s historical and cultural contexts. In Year 1, students take foundational courses such as Introduction to Visual Culture and Contemporary Issues in the History of Western Art, along with science and social science context credits and electives. During Years 2 and 3, students choose six credits from a broad range of specialized courses, including the history of photography, Renaissance art, visual culture of different eras, curatorial practices, and studies in Mediterranean lands, among others. These courses incorporate thematic, experiential, and collaborative learning approaches that foster deep analytical skills and an appreciation of art’s societal impact. Students also complete electives to broaden their knowledge. In Year 4, students engage in advanced studies and research opportunities, including directed studies, research seminars, and an honours thesis. The program also offers courses in arts management, public policy, and curatorial practicum, preparing students for professional careers in museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and heritage organizations. The combination of theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical experience equips graduates to pursue advanced studies or diverse roles within the art and cultural sectors, both locally and internationally.
