COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish program offers a comprehensive progression of courses designed to build language proficiency and cultural understanding. Beginning with SPAN 1F00, Introductory Spanish Language, students engage in intensive practice of oral, written, and reading skills, alongside exploring cultural contexts through selected readings and multimedia materials. In SPAN 1F90, Intermediate Spanish Language, students deepen their grammar knowledge and enhance their communication skills while further exploring literary and cultural expressions from the Spanish-speaking world. SPAN 2P11, Iberian Cultures, traces the formation of Spanish and Portuguese cultures through social, political, religious, intellectual, literary, and artistic developments, with attention to multicultural influences, maritime explorations, globalization, and diasporic identities, using print and visual media. SPAN 2P19, Applied Language: Review and Practice, offers comprehensive grammar review focusing on language structure and critical thinking, preparing students for SPAN 2P20, which surveys major literary and cultural texts and develops research and critical writing skills. Other courses, such as SPAN 2P95, Latin American and Iberian Film, analyze cinema’s role in expressing nationality, ethnicity, gender, and politics, while SPAN 2Q98, Introduction to Chicanx and Latinx Studies, provides an interdisciplinary approach to identity, decolonization, and cultural production in Latinx communities. Finally, SPAN 4P01 highlights Latin American women’s perspectives, emphasizing their societal impact through diverse cultural works.
