COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies program at Brock University offers a comprehensive curriculum that spans four years, beginning with foundational courses such as FILM 1F94 Introduction to Film Studies and COMM 1P91 and 1P92, which introduce key themes and concepts in communication and media studies. First-year students also complete one Sciences context credit, one Social Sciences context credit, and one elective. In the second year, students explore specialized topics including Theories of Popular Culture, Documentary Film, Canadian Cinema, and Film History I and II, alongside practical courses like Introduction to Digital Film Production. Electives and additional credits allow students to tailor their studies further, with options covering Popular Narrative, Popular Cinema, Latin American and Iberian Film, and Media Industries. Third-year courses deepen this engagement with subjects like Television Studies, Principles of Moving Images, Adaptation Across Media, Canadian Television, and various thematic studies such as Gender and Cinema, Indigenous Film, and Representation Matters. The program also offers interdisciplinary courses like Digital Video in Contemporary Art and Sound Design. In the final year, students complete advanced FILM credits, focusing on upper-level courses numbered 2(alpha)00 to 4(alpha)01, complemented by two elective credits. This structure provides students with both critical knowledge and practical skills essential for careers in film, television, and media industries.
