COURSE CURRICULUM

BA (Honours) in Classics at Brock University may earn a Concentration in Ancient Art and Archaeology by completing seven credits focused on the ancient Mediterranean and Near East cultures, emphasizing visual and material culture. This concentration is ideal for those interested in advanced study in Classical archaeology. Required courses include Introduction to Archaeology, Cities and Sanctuaries of the Ancient World, and advanced studies in the art and architecture of the Roman Republic, Roman Empire, Early Greece, and Classical Greece and the Hellenistic World. Students must also complete introductory language courses in either Greek or Latin. Additionally, one credit must be chosen from foundational courses such as Discovering Ancient Greece, Discovering Ancient Rome, Culture and Civilization of Central Europe, or Myths of the Greek and Roman Gods or Heroic Age. The program further requires two credits from experiential or specialized courses, including archaeological practicums, study abroad opportunities in Mediterranean lands, and topics such as Archaeology of Technology, Archaeology of Death, Archaeological Ethics, and Art and Archaeology of Etruscan Italy. This concentration blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience, preparing students for careers or further academic work in archaeology and the study of ancient civilizations.
