COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Studies major at Brock University offers a comprehensive program designed to explore the development and experiences of young people within diverse social, cultural, and biological contexts. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational topics through courses such as Introduction to Child and Youth Studies, Foundations of Psychology, and Sociology, alongside humanities or science credits and electives. The second year focuses on deeper exploration with courses on Child and Youth Development, Bodymind Diversity, and research methods, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, as well as service-learning or community engagement principles. In the third year, students advance their research skills through qualitative and quantitative research methods courses and select credits from developmental, bodymind diversity, and sociocultural clusters, complemented by elective courses to broaden their knowledge. The fourth year centers on advanced Child and Youth Studies courses, offering specialized topics within the field and additional electives to support individual interests. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills essential for careers in education, social services, healthcare, and community agencies or for further academic study. The program’s multidisciplinary approach prepares graduates to understand and support children and youth in varied professional and community settings.
