COURSE CURRICULUM

The undergraduate program in Linguistics, with a focus on Communication Disorders, provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the scientific study of language and its practical application to real-world contexts. In Year 1, students are introduced to the field through core courses such as LING 1P93 (Introduction to Communication Disorders) and LING 1P94 (Introduction to General Linguistics I), alongside electives like LING 1P92, 1P95, or 2P93, and a required sciences context course. Students also take two elective credits, with COMM 1F90 recommended to strengthen communication fundamentals. Year 2 focuses on deepening understanding with courses such as Fundamentals of English Grammar (LING 2P10), Phonetics (LING 2P50), and Applied Phonetics (LING 2P51). Additional topics include Sociolinguistics (LING 2P72), Literacy in Childhood and Youth (LING 2P99), and another LING course of choice, alongside one Humanities context credit and one-half elective credit. In Year 3, students explore more advanced topics including Child Language Acquisition (LING 3P61), Phonology (LING 3P53), Syntax (LING 3P71), Semantics and Pragmatics (LING 3P94), and specialized topics like Gender and Language (LING 3P93), Discourse Analysis (LING 3P95), and Second Language Acquisition (LING 3Q91), finishing with one and a half elective credits to round out the year.
