COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecological Restoration graduate program spans three levels, combining core courses, electives, and a thesis or course-based option totaling 30 credits. In Level 1 (Fall Term), students complete foundational courses including Concepts of Ecological Restoration & the Biotic and Abiotic Environment (3.0 credits), Planning and Monitoring for Ecological Restoration (3.0 credits), Indigenous and Social Perspectives on Ecological Restoration 1 (1.5 credits), and Graduate Seminar in Research Methods (3.0 credits). Students pursuing the thesis option also complete Thesis Concept (1.0 credit). In Level 2 (Winter Term), the curriculum includes Indigenous and Social Perspectives on Ecological Restoration 2 (1.5 credits), Project Management and Community Engagement (3.0 credits), and a choice between Restoration of Terrestrial Ecosystems or Restoration of Lentic Ecosystems (3.0 credits). Thesis option students must also complete Thesis Proposal (1.0 credit). The thesis itself is a substantial research project completed over the Spring/Summer Term and Year 2, carrying 10.0 credits. For the course-based option, Levels 3 and 4 offer a selection of electives totaling 9.0 credits, which must be chosen from courses such as Restoration of Wetland and Estuarine Ecosystems, Restoring Wildlife: Ecological Concepts & Practical Application, Statistical Applications for Ecological Restoration, Directed Studies, Application of Planning and Monitoring for Ecological Restoration, Restoration of Lotic Ecosystems, and Advanced Applications for Restoration of Terrestrial Ecosystems, each typically 3.0 credits. Students must consult the Program Head if planning to take electives outside the institution. The program emphasizes both theoretical and applied knowledge in ecological restoration, including indigenous perspectives, project management, and ecosystem-specific restoration techniques, preparing graduates for careers or further research in this critical field. Total credits required for completion are 30.0.
