COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering in Building Science program requires students to complete a total of 30.0 credits, structured across core technical courses, electives, research components, and graduate seminars. The program begins with 12.0 credits of required core technical courses that provide foundational knowledge essential for understanding building performance. These include Building Science 1, Building Materials, Building Envelope 1, and Building Energy Performance. Beyond the core, students choose their technical electives based on their selected program pathway. Path 1, the course option, requires 18.0 credits from six elective courses, allowing students to deepen their expertise in specialized areas such as Building Science Acoustics, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality, Advanced Energy Simulation, and more. With approval from the Graduate Program Director, students may select one elective from outside the program to further tailor their studies. Path 2, the industry/research project option, requires fewer electives—9.0 credits from three courses—alongside a significant applied research component. This includes 3.0 credits in Research Methods and a 6.0-credit Industry/Research Project, in which students engage in supervised applied research addressing a relevant industry problem. Both pathways include participation in graduate seminars—Graduate Seminar Orientation and Graduate Seminar Series—which are required but non-credit courses designed to enhance students’ academic engagement and research skills. The curriculum balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing graduates for advanced professional roles or further academic pursuits. This program offers flexibility in specialization and research focus, supported by a strong academic framework and industry collaboration.
