COURSE CURRICULUM

The BCIT Building Engineering/Building Science Master of Applied Science program consists of a rigorous and well-structured curriculum totaling 33.0 credits, divided into core technical courses, technical electives, and research components, along with mandatory non-credit graduate seminars. Students must complete 9.0 credits of required core technical courses, which include Building Science 1, Building Materials, and Building Envelope 1—courses designed to establish a solid foundation in building performance and construction science. In addition, students must choose 6.0 credits from a wide range of technical electives such as Building Acoustics, Building Energy Performance, Mechanical Systems and Control, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality, Building Envelope 2, and Advanced Energy Simulation, among others. With approval from the Graduate Program Director, students may take one elective from outside the program. The core of the program is its 18.0-credit research component, starting with Research Methods and followed by a series of structured courses—Proposal Preparation Part 1 and Part 2, leading to the Research Proposal and culminating in the 12.0-credit Research Thesis. This sequence supports students in planning, conducting, and presenting original scientific research. Additionally, students are required to participate in Graduate Seminar Orientation and the Graduate Seminar Series, which, while non-credit, provide critical exposure to current research, academic discourse, and peer learning. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills, preparing graduates to advance scientific understanding and offer real-world solutions in the field of building science. By blending advanced coursework with applied research, the program delivers a unique interdisciplinary education that positions graduates for leadership in academia, research institutions, consulting, or industry roles focused on sustainable building technologies and high-performance construction systems.
