COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Interior Design at BCIT offers a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the technical and creative skills needed for successful careers in interior design, particularly within commercial sectors. The program spans two levels—Level 3 (15 weeks) and Level 4 (20 weeks)—and delivers a total of 63.0 credits. In Level 3, students develop foundational and technical competencies through courses such as Design Theory 2 (3.0 credits), Commercial Design Studio A (6.0 credits), Commercial Construction Drawings (3.0 credits), and Advanced Digital Illustration (3.0 credits), alongside Joinery Fundamentals for Interior Design (3.5 credits), which provides hands-on experience with millwork. Other Level 3 offerings include Human and Environmental Factors and Communication 2 (3.0 credits each), plus 3.0 credits of General Education Electives. In Level 4, students explore advanced topics such as Commercial Lighting (3.5 credits), Revit for Interior Design (3.0 credits), Virtual Reality for Interior Design (1.0 credit), and Building Codes and Barrier-Free Design (3.0 credits). Studio and technical courses like Commercial Design Studio B (7.0 credits), Architectural Millwork Studio (7.0 credits), and Interior Construction and Renovation (2.0 credits) round out the applied learning experience. Additional instruction in materials, specifications, and critical reading and writing ensure students develop strong analytical and communication abilities. A foundational art history course, Introduction to Western Visual Culture (3.0 credits), enriches students’ contextual understanding. This intensive, design-focused curriculum prepares graduates with real-world, industry-relevant skills to thrive in professional interior design environments.
