COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical and Environmental Engineering Technology Diploma at British Columbia Institute of Technology follows a structured four-level curriculum combining theory, laboratory work, and applied skills across approximately 120.5 credits. In Level 1, students build a strong foundation through courses in computer applications, environmental science, general chemistry, laboratory techniques, technical communication, mathematics, and introductory physics. Level 2 expands into core engineering topics such as engineering materials, chemical engineering fundamentals, air pollution control, environmental sampling, water treatment, organic chemistry, calculus, and advanced physics. After the first year, students may choose to complete an optional co-operative education placement, gaining practical industry experience. In Level 3, the focus shifts toward more specialized and applied subjects, including applied research, bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering technology, physical chemistry, process measurement and control, and advanced analytical techniques, with an option to choose between organic chemistry or pulp and paper processing. Level 4 emphasizes professional and industry readiness, featuring courses in ethics, sustainable energy, instrumental analysis, unit operations, and technical communication, along with a major applied research project and practicum. Students also select electives such as mineral processing or instrumental organic analysis to tailor their expertise. Overall, the program provides a balanced mix of scientific knowledge, engineering principles, hands-on training, and industry exposure, preparing graduates for diverse technical roles or further academic advancement.
