COURSE CURRICULUM

The Broadcast and Online Journalism Diploma at BCIT is a comprehensive two-year program totaling 99.0 credits and structured across four levels, combining technical training, hands-on experience, and industry practicum placements. In Level 1, students build foundational skills through courses in videography, video editing, on-air performance, news reporting, audio production, broadcast writing, and visual fundamentals for journalists. Level 2 deepens their expertise with specialized courses in media law, television news and video journalism, news reporting, audio storytelling, and multiplatform writing, while a four-week practicum (Journalism Practicum 1) offers real-world newsroom experience. Students also engage in digital journalism and radio news lab work, with communication skills honed through a media relations course. In Level 3, the curriculum shifts to intensive newsroom production and advanced reporting with high-credit courses such as Radio Newsroom, Video Storytelling, Digital Newsroom, and Advanced Journalism, simulating the fast-paced media environment. Level 4 focuses on multiplatform integration and capstone experiences, with courses in web design for journalists, a major Multiplatform Newsroom course, and Journalism Practicum 2 — a second four-week industry placement. The final piece of the program is the Documentary Capstone, where students create a professional documentary project. This matrix ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers across broadcast, radio, digital, and multimedia journalism platforms.
