COURSE CURRICULUM

The BCIT Automotive Service Technician and Operations (ASTO) program is a comprehensive, hands-on training experience designed to equip students with the technical skills needed to diagnose and repair modern vehicle systems. Spanning four terms, the program combines classroom learning with two paid 22-week co-op work terms in an automotive repair facility, offering students invaluable industry experience. In Term 1, students are introduced to automotive science fundamentals, workplace safety, welding, tools and equipment, and key systems like brakes, suspension, and electrical. The second term focuses on advanced automotive topics such as mechanical applications, customer relations, and electrical systems, preparing students for the Level 2 standardized exam. Term 3 delves into complex systems, including electronic chassis systems, engine repair, and emission control, while also covering business operations and automotive communications. The final term addresses specialized systems like heating, ventilation, all-wheel drive, and hybrid/electric vehicle technology, along with advanced business management training. With a total of 141 credits, the program ensures students are well-prepared for their Red Seal certification and careers in automotive service and management. The combination of in-depth technical training and real-world co-op experience provides graduates with the skills and qualifications necessary for a successful career in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
