COURSE CURRICULUM

Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation program consists of 72.0 credits and offers a structured curriculum designed to develop essential skills for entry into the heavy mechanical trades. Students begin with core courses such as Workplace Safety (2.0 credits) and Employability Skills (1.5), ensuring a strong foundation in safe work practices and professional conduct. Technical training starts with Tools and Equipment (7.5) and Welding (3.5), providing hands-on experience in using industry-standard tools and basic welding techniques. The Operation of Equipment course (5.0) allows students to gain familiarity with the functionality and handling of heavy machinery. Key mechanical systems are covered in-depth, including Brakes (12.0), Hydraulics (4.5), Electricity (7.5), and Suspension and Steering (9.5), equipping students with critical troubleshooting and repair skills. Additional courses include Trailer systems (4.0), HVAC systems (2.0), Engine and Supporting Systems (6.5), Powertrain (6.0), and Structural Components and Accessories (0.5), offering a well-rounded education across all major vehicle and equipment systems. The curriculum is delivered through a blend of classroom instruction and practical shop training, mirroring industry environments and expectations. By the end of the program, students are prepared to take on entry-level positions or pursue apprenticeships in fields such as heavy-duty equipment technician, truck and transport mechanic, or related trades.
