COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering is an intensive four-year program totaling 232.0 credits, structured to provide a strong foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of civil engineering. In the first two years, students develop core competencies in statics, hydrology, surveying, construction materials, hydraulics, mechanics of materials, and communication, alongside foundational courses in calculus, statistics, and physics. A significant hands-on component includes graphical communication, manual and computer-aided drafting, and industry-standard surveying tools. Levels 3 and 4 introduce more advanced subjects such as sustainability, construction management, soil mechanics, road design, structural engineering, and municipal engineering, with students undertaking an Industry Project in Level 4. Electives in areas like land development, traffic engineering, and chemistry allow for early specialization. Advancement to the final two years requires meeting continuation requirements, including completion of CHEM 6020 and MATH 6010, and 700 hours of practical work experience. In Levels 5 to 8, students study advanced materials, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, and design of concrete, masonry, and steel structures. Liberal studies electives, courses in economics and engineering law, and geology round out the interdisciplinary curriculum. A two-part capstone project simulates real-world design challenges. Students in the co-op stream undertake up to four work terms integrated between academic sessions, gaining valuable industry experience. Technical electives in areas such as seismic design, stormwater management, timber structures, and applied research allow students to tailor their final-year studies. The program emphasizes communication, teamwork, and the ethical responsibilities of engineers while preparing graduates for professional practice across the diverse civil engineering sector.
