COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program at BCIT is a comprehensive, full-time, post-degree program designed for graduates from related disciplines seeking specialized expertise in spatial technologies. The program is structured into three intensive terms beginning with Level 7 (Fall), where students complete foundational and technical courses including GIS Programming 1, Fundamentals of GIS, Mapping, CAD for GIS, and introductory ArcGIS training. Students also explore remote sensing, GIS computing and internet applications, project proposal development, and GIS database systems. In Level 8 (Winter), students deepen their skills through advanced topics such as GIS Programming 2, Spatial Analysis, Digital Mapping and Cartography, Technical Issues in GIS, and ArcGIS 3: Customization and Modelling, along with database systems and geospatial systems management. The final component, Level 8 (Spring), focuses on real-world application through either a 13.0-credit GIS Project or an Industry Practicum, complemented by the course on Management Issues in GIS. The curriculum integrates theory and applied learning using industry-standard tools and methods, ensuring students develop both technical competency and professional readiness. The mandatory capstone—whether project or practicum—gives students critical experience in solving real problems for clients or employers, positioning them for successful careers in GIS across public and private sectors. The program totals 66.0 credits.
