COURSE CURRICULUM

The General Insurance and Risk Management Diploma at BCIT is a comprehensive two-year, full-time program totaling 119.5 credits, designed to equip students with the specialized knowledge and practical skills needed for success in the insurance and risk management industry. In Level 1 (15 weeks), students build a solid business foundation through courses such as Business Information Systems, Business Communication 1, Microeconomics, Essentials of Marketing, Business Mathematics, and Principles and Practice of Insurance, the latter providing an essential introduction to the insurance industry. Level 2 (20 weeks) advances the curriculum with Applied Data Analytics in Excel, Organizational Development, Macroeconomics, Accounting for Management, Business Statistics, Project Management, and Insurance Broker and Agent Roles, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of business and insurance operations. In Level 3, students delve into industry-specific content with courses such as Business Law, Security Fundamentals, Property Insurance, Automobile Insurance, Marketing for Insurance and Risk Management, Risk Assessment, and Advanced Broker and Agent Skills, providing hands-on training and sector insights. Level 4 includes advanced study in Liability Insurance, Loss Adjusting, Sales for Insurance Professionals, Principles of Underwriting, Risk Control, Risk Financing, Business Strategy, and a 40-hour field placement through RMGT 4950, giving students valuable industry experience before graduation. Throughout the program, students benefit from networking opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to real-world practices. Graduates are well-prepared to write the three GRMI national exams and have completed 8 of the 10 Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) courses, making them job-ready upon program completion.
