COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant diploma program offers a detailed six-term curriculum designed to prepare students for roles in rehabilitation support across occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation, and speech-language pathology. The first term covers foundational subjects such as English Composition, Anatomy and Physiology for Rehabilitation, Introduction to Rehabilitation, Professional Communication and Collaboration, Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure, and Therapeutic Mobility, giving students a strong base in anatomy, therapy principles, and communication skills. The second term builds on this foundation with courses like Functional Anatomy, Pathophysiology for Rehabilitation, Foundations of Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Cardiopulmonary and Preventative Care, and Therapeutic Modalities, enhancing students’ knowledge of therapy methods and client care. In the third term, students focus on Integrated Care Across the Lifespan, Therapeutic Exercise, and Rehabilitation Assessment Measures to support clients through various life stages with appropriate therapies and assessments. The fourth term includes a major Occupational and Physical Therapy Assistant Practicum, along with Mental Health and Cognition in Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation Programs courses, allowing students to apply their skills in practical settings. The fifth term addresses Rehabilitation for Diverse Populations, Speech and Communication Disorders, Language and Swallowing Disorders, and includes practicums in Recreation Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology Assistance, broadening students’ expertise in specialized areas. The final term consists of an Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant Practicum where students integrate and demonstrate their comprehensive skills in real-world environments. With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and practicum placements, students must meet minimum grade requirements throughout the program, ensuring they develop the interdisciplinary skills needed to support clients effectively and work collaboratively in diverse rehabilitation settings.
