COURSE CURRICULUM

This Early Childhood Education and Development diploma program prepares students to support the learning, well-being, and development of young children through a combination of theory and practical experience. In Term 1, students begin with foundational courses such as Introduction to Early Childhood and Development, Child Development: An Introduction, Holistic Wellbeing in Early Childhood Education and Development, English Composition, and the first practicum placement, Early Childhood Education and Development Practicum I. Term 2 builds on this foundation with courses like Interpersonal Relationships and Communication Skills, Developing Through Play, Supporting Children’s Social and Emotional Development, Introduction to Indigenous Studies, and a practicum focused on observation in early childhood settings. In Term 3, students focus on creativity and exploration with courses such as Creative Expressions: Theory and Practice, Language, Literacy, and Communication in the Early Years, Outdoor Play, Learning, and Exploration, Sociology of the Family, and School Age Care. The final term emphasizes advanced skills and leadership with courses like Caring for Infants and Toddlers, Inclusive Care and Education of Young Children, Critical Issues in Early Childhood Education and Development, and Leadership and Partnerships in Early Childhood Education. Students complete a capstone practicum called Reflective Practice in Early Childhood Education and Development, applying their knowledge in real-world settings. The program incorporates principles from Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework, promoting child-centered, play-based learning, inclusive practices, and professional reflection. With several zero-textbook-cost and PLAR-eligible courses, the program is flexible and accessible. Graduates gain the practical experience, theoretical knowledge, and leadership skills needed to create positive, inclusive environments for children and families in early learning and child care settings.
