COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the General Business Major, students take a range of foundational courses to build essential business knowledge. These include ACCT1103 - Introduction to Financial Accounting, where students learn accounting principles and financial statements; HRES1101 - Organizational Behaviour, which explores human behaviour and its impact on organizational effectiveness; HRES2201 - Introduction to Human Resources, covering human resource functions and workplace culture; MGMT1101 - Introduction to Management, focusing on key management concepts and skills; MGMT1102 - Introduction to Organizations and Sustainability, examining how businesses integrate economic, ethical, and environmental responsibilities; MGMT1201 - Business Communication, which develops effective communication skills in a business context; MGMT1401 - Microeconomics, providing a foundation in economic analysis and consumer behaviour; MGMT1601 - Business Law, which introduces the legal aspects of business management; MGMT2401 - Macroeconomics, focusing on the economy at an aggregate level; and MKTG1101 - Introduction to Marketing, which teaches marketing principles and the role of marketing in business.In the second year of the General Business Major, students complete ACCT2201 - Management Accounting I, which covers the principles of managerial accounting, focusing on planning, controlling, and measuring operations. Key topics include costing systems, cost-volume-profit relationships, budgeting, and variance analysis, all crucial for understanding business operations. Additionally, students take MGMT2998 - Business Strategy, where they apply business strategy theory and frameworks. This course integrates knowledge from previous business courses, demonstrating how different aspects of an organization must work together strategically to achieve its goals in a competitive environment. Learners work in multi-disciplinary teams to develop long-term strategies for organizations.For the General Business Major, students are required to complete a Work Integrated Learning course, choosing one of the following options: MGMT2995 - General Business Sustainable Service Learning, MGMT2994 - General Business Capstone, or MGMT2993 - General Business Field Placement. In MGMT2995, learners engage in community service to assist a partner in enhancing sustainability practices and reducing their carbon footprint, building on knowledge from MGMT1102 and TOUR2104. MGMT2994 allows students to apply their skills in solving real-world industry and community problems, demonstrating research, reflection, communication, and presentation abilities. In MGMT2993, learners utilize their current employment to identify and address a problem, creating a project that integrates business theory with practical application.
