COURSE CURRICULUM

In Term 1 of the Advanced Game Development program, students will delve into the fundamentals of game design, technical design, environmental art, and game programming. GAME1101 – Game Design teaches core principles like game feel, player psychology, and choice, while having students create design documents to transform their ideas into work. GAME1201 – Technical Design introduces advanced features of Unreal Engine, applying programming, art, and design knowledge to create content such as AI, terrain, foliage, and particle effects, building a technical portfolio. GAME1301 – Environmental Art focuses on game-ready asset creation, where students use Maya, Photoshop, and Substance Painter to craft environments and props, preparing assets for their portfolios. Finally, GAME1401 – Game Programming I covers C# fundamentals, programming concepts like variables, loops, and object-oriented programming, and using Unity to create a small game from scratch.In Term 2 of the Advanced Game Development program, students will further enhance their skills in game design, programming, character art, and visual scripting. GAME1102 – Level Design focuses on teaching level design theory, where students build a playable action-adventure level from concept to completion, including documentation, asset placement, and polishing the experience for their portfolios. GAME1202 – Visual Scripting dives into Unreal Engine’s Blueprint visual scripting system, where students learn to create gameplay using programming concepts such as functions, variables, and loops, while applying Unreal’s Gameplay Framework. GAME1302 – Character Art allows students to craft game-ready characters using ZBrush and Maya, alongside texturing and material creation in Photoshop and Substance Painter, while learning in-engine lighting and rendering techniques. Finally, GAME1402 – Game Programming II continues to build on Unity and C#, where students explore advanced concepts like Singletons, Coroutines, and networking, as they create small games and custom systems for UI management, pathfinding, and object pooling.In Term 3 of the Advanced Game Development program, students focus on developing skills in UI/UX design, character animation, rapid prototyping, and advanced game programming. GAME1103 – User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) Design teaches students the principles and best practices of UI/UX design, guiding them through the entire process from strategizing to prototyping and implementation, culminating in a mobile game UI and case study for their portfolio. GAME1303 – Character Animation expands students’ skillsets by focusing on rigging and animating game characters, including applying animation principles and incorporating motion capture data for realistic animations. GAME1501 – Rapid Prototype Development pushes students to form multidisciplinary teams and create over a dozen game prototypes, teaching them how to work under tight timelines, leverage constraints, and effectively communicate in a production environment. GAME2401 – Game Programming III dives into advanced Unity and C# features such as Scriptable Objects, dynamic asset loading, and asynchronous multiplayer game development, where students create a mobile strategy game, mastering complex programming techniques.In Term 4 of the Advanced Game Development program, students delve deeper into game systems design, technical art, rendering techniques, and rapid game development. GAME2101 – Systems Design explores various systems in game development, including multiplayer, social, and core gameplay systems. Students will learn essential design theories like compulsion loops and input/output, and document their designs using briefs, flowcharts, and wireframes, followed by prototyping in-engine. GAME2301 – Technical Art teaches students how to use Unreal Engine for advanced material functionality, particle effects, mesh and animation techniques, and the creation of custom tools and scripts to streamline asset pipelines. GAME2402 – Shaders and Rendering introduces students to 3D rendering techniques, including creating custom shaders and rendering pipelines in both Unity and Unreal, using node-based approaches. Finally, GAME2501 – Rapid Game Development I emphasizes collaborative teamwork, where students rapidly produce small games for their portfolios while learning project management and quality assurance skills to manage production and minimize bugs.In Term 6 of the Advanced Game Development program, students complete their final industry project courses, honing their skills and creating a professional portfolio. GAME2504 – Industry Project I: Pre-Production kicks off the process, where students form teams to ideate, pitch, and draft documentation for a single game concept, creating a playable prototype to demonstrate its core feature. This course provides essential pre-production experience, guided by staff and industry mentors. GAME2505 – Industry Project II: First Production sees students begin production on their final game, working to deliver a playable vertical slice that showcases the core gameplay loop, while receiving valuable feedback from industry mentors. GAME2506 – Industry Project III: Production continues the development process, with students focusing on two major game production milestones—alpha and beta. Students will collaborate closely with their teams and mentors, refining their communication and project management skills. Finally, GAME2999 – Capstone Industry Project: Game Development culminates the program, where students polish their games, fix bugs, and present them to industry professionals. They will also work on marketing materials, build their portfolios, and network with potential employers to prepare for a successful career in the gaming industry.
