COURSE CURRICULUM

and FIPR1104 - Cinematography I: The Grammar of Cinematic Storytelling (3 credits), in which students gain practical experience with cameras and learn the fundamentals of cinematography, including on-set procedures.In Term 2, required courses include FIPR1105 - Cinematography II: Lighting Applications and Techniques (3 credits), where students build upon their camera and lighting skills, learning the role of the Director of Photography and visual storytelling techniques; FIPR1201 - Directing I: Technique and Approach (3 credits), which deepens students’ understanding of the director’s role by focusing on interacting with the production crew, creating scripts, blocking scenes, and guiding actors; FIPR1202 - Producing: Film Finance, Budgeting, and Scheduling (3 credits), where students learn to break down scripts for commercial viability, develop budgets, and create pitch documents for film projects; and FIPR1301 - Screenwriting: The Mechanics and Mythology of Storytelling, Script Development, and Pitching (3 credits), which explores the screenwriting process, from script creation to pitching, and teaches how to evaluate, give, and receive feedback.In Term 3, required courses include FIPR1106 - Cinematography III: Crafting Creative Photography (3 credits), where students deepen their understanding of lighting techniques to help directors convey emotion, with hands-on experience working with other positions on set; FIPR1203 - Directing II: Casting and Working with Actors (3 credits), which examines the collaboration between the Director and Producer, teaching students interpersonal skills and techniques for successful partnerships; FIPR2302 - Post-Production III: Colour Grading and Picture Delivery (3 credits), focusing on the tools and theory behind color grading and picture delivery to prepare students for work in post-production; FIPR2201 - Industry Career Preparation and Interviewing Skills (3 credits), which focuses on helping students hone resumes, cover letters, demo reels, scripts, and pitch materials while providing support for deciding on a career path; FIPR2301 - Post-Production II: Visual Effects (3 credits), where students incorporate visual effects, sound, and color correction to push toward final delivery, learning essential post-production tools to enrich storytelling; and FIPR2302 - Post-Production III: Color Grading and Picture Delivery (3 credits), which builds on prior knowledge to deepen students' understanding of color grading and picture delivery, preparing them for the final stages of film production.In Term 6, required courses include FIPR2202 - Film Production Industry Project I: Preproduction (3 credits), where students begin developing a marketable reel and focus on preproduction tasks such as locking the shooting script, creating storyboards, securing locations, selecting teams, and casting talent; FIPR2203 - Film Production Industry Project II: Production (5 credits), which focuses on establishing a production schedule, adhering to industry standards, and starting principle photography for the student’s production project; FIPR2204 - Film Production Industry Project III: Industry Presentation and Critique (4 credits), where students refine their professional communication skills, assemble and re-edit their film, and add sound, music, VFX, color correction, and finalize the project; and FIPR2999 - Film Production Capstone Project: Review, Post-Mortem, and Portfolio (5 credits), which culminates in synthesizing the previous projects to create a final marketable reel, including a promotional trailer and other marketing materials for job applications.
