COURSE CURRICULUM

In Term 1 of the Advanced 3D Animation & 3D Modelling program, students are required to complete four foundational courses. ANMO1201 - Computer Animation Production (3 credits) introduces the entire animation production pipeline, focusing on titling, image processing, compositing, and 3D animation, while exploring digital animation tools and processes. ANMO1301 - Cinematics for Animation (3 credits) teaches the filmmaking techniques crucial for animation and visual effects, emphasizing story development, shooting, and editing, as well as film analysis to understand filmmaking decisions. ANMO1101 - Introduction to Animation Principles and Techniques (3 credits) provides a hands-on exploration of animation principles through experimental and stop-motion techniques using clay, paper cutouts, and puppets, laying the groundwork for future animation studies. Lastly, ANMO1202 - Perspective (3 credits) covers essential perspective principles, where students learn to apply them in creating believable environments by sketching, drawing, and storyboarding, focusing on light, shadows, and reflections. In Term 2 of the Advanced 3D Animation & 3D Modelling program, students are required to complete four courses. ANMO1203 - 3D Modelling I (3 credits) introduces the basics of 3D polygon modeling, focusing on computer geometry, modeling, lighting, texture mapping, and rendering within a production setting. ANMO1501 - Preproduction Principles for Animation (3 credits) provides an introduction to professional preproduction, emphasizing idea generation, concept design, visual development, and storyboarding, with a focus on animation and VFX techniques. ANMO1102 - 3D Animation I (3 credits) covers character animation, including pose thumbnailing, reference filming, building constraints, and refining arcs while maintaining energy. The final assignment involves completing a short animation from start to finish, integrating timing and spline movements. ANMO1204 - Texturing and Surfacing (3 credits) focuses on UV mapping and materials, teaching students how to work with maps and textures in both 2D and 3D software, with an inclusion of real-time texturing for practical application. In Term 4 of the Advanced 3D Animation & 3D Modelling program, students are required to complete four courses. ANMO2102 - Character Rigging (3 credits) introduces the fundamentals of character design and 3D character set-up, providing students with methodologies for creating flexible characters that can be easily revised in a 3D environment. ANMO2103 - 3D Animation III (3 credits) builds upon previous animation principles and incorporates advanced techniques, teaching students how to effectively use facial controls, film references, and master body mechanics. ANMO2203 - Texturing and Lighting for Animation (3 credits) focuses on the artistic and technical aspects of texturing and lighting, providing students with a solid foundation for future studies in these areas. ANMO2301 - Storyboarding: Camera Language and Animatics (3 credits) covers the essentials of professional storyboarding, including story development, camera language, and the creation of preproduction packets, animatics, and story reels. In Term 5 of the Advanced 3D Animation & 3D Modelling program, students are required to complete four courses. ANMO2501 - Previs and Postvis (3 credits) teaches students how to create animated shots for previsualization (previs) and temporary visual effects shots for postvisualization (postvis) in live-action films. ANMO2202 - 3D Modelling III (3 credits) continues the 3D modelling journey, refining skills in hard surface modelling in Maya and exploring cloth creation in Marvelous Designer. ANMO2401 - Look Development and Lighting (3 credits) focuses on using Substance for texturing and enhancing the understanding of CG lighting and rendering in Maya. ANMO2204 - Sculpting II (3 credits) builds on previous sculpting and rigging knowledge, refining techniques for creating animation-ready characters and creatures with a focus on topology and improving the overall modelling process.
