COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education Assistant program at Bow Valley College is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to support children and teens with diverse needs in the classroom through two terms of focused study. In the first term, students take courses such as Introduction to the Role of Education Assistant, Trauma-informed Practice, Communication Skills, Indigenous Approaches to Education, Creating a Safe Learning Environment, and Supporting Students and Teachers Across Contexts, which build foundational knowledge, cultural awareness, and practical strategies for inclusive education. The second term emphasizes specialized skills like Provide Behavioural Support and Provide Academic Support, preparing students to effectively assist with behavioural challenges and academic tasks. The program culminates in a seven-week, six-credit practicum where students gain hands-on experience in a real school setting, applying their skills directly with students and teachers. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is available for students with relevant prior experience or education, allowing for a faster completion path. This flexible, competency-based program is designed to meet industry expectations and includes a variety of teaching and assessment methods, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the role of an Education Assistant in today’s diverse and inclusive educational environments.
