ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Bishop's University, located in Lennoxville, a borough of Sherbrooke, Quebec, is a small English-language liberal arts institution founded in 1843 by Anglican Bishop George Jehoshaphat Mountain. Originally established as Bishop's College, it grew out of the Lennoxville Classical School and was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria in 1853. Bishop's is one of only three primarily English-speaking universities in Quebec, alongside McGill and Concordia in Montreal. It was modeled after an American-style liberal arts college and had historical ties with the University of Oxford. Initially governed by the Anglican Church, Bishop's became a non-denominational institution in 1947 and is now managed through a bicameral system involving a board of governors and an academic senate.Over its history, Bishop’s has had brief ventures into professional faculties such as medicine and law, both of which were eventually closed. The university weathered many financial and institutional challenges, including a fire in 1891 and declining enrolment in the early 2000s. By 2008, it faced a serious crisis with low morale, faculty unrest, and a \$1.4 million deficit. However, strong leadership and a renewed focus on student recruitment helped the university rebound by 2010, increasing enrolment and stabilizing finances. In 2023, the Quebec government proposed tuition increases for out-of-province students, posing a significant threat to Bishop’s, which relies heavily on such enrolment. The policy raised concerns about the university’s future viability. Following public pressure and recognition of the institution’s unique role, Premier François Legault announced an exemption for Bishop's from the tuition hikes. Today, Bishop's continues to focus on undergraduate education and shares its campus with Champlain College Lennoxville. It remains an important institution within Quebec’s higher education landscape, with a legacy of producing leaders including 15 Rhodes Scholars.
