COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. HON) in Environmental Science at Algoma University offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary course structure designed to build strong foundations in biology, chemistry, and geography. In Year 1, students take introductory courses such as ENVS 1006 (Introduction to Environmental Science), BIOL 1506/1507 (Biology I and II), CHMI 1006/1007 (Chemistry I and II), and foundational courses in geology, math, critical thinking, and electives from humanities or social sciences. Year 2 focuses on deeper scientific inquiry with BIOL 2056 (Principles of Scientific Inquiry), CHMI 2426 (Organic Chemistry I), ENVS 2126 (Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis), and GIS and physical geography, alongside closed and general electives. Year 3 advances into applied topics like BIOL 3396 (Ecology), CHMI 3016 (Biochemistry I), ENVS 3106 (Pollution), ENVS 3206 (Environmental Chemistry), and includes an internship (ENVS 3456) and a course on Indigenous knowledge in resource management. Students also complete additional closed and general electives. In Year 4, those pursuing the honours option complete a thesis (ENVS 4105) and upper-year electives, ensuring at least 9 credits from Group A. This structured yet flexible program allows students to tailor their studies while gaining hands-on experience and specialized knowledge to prepare for diverse careers in the environmental sector.
