The college is named after Sir Alexander Mackenzie, a Scottish-born explorer and author known for his fur trade adventures. Initially, Alexander College focused on University Transfer and English for Academic Purposes programs for first- and second-year undergraduates. In 2006, it received approval to offer the Associate of Arts degree, followed by the Associate of Science degree in 2011.
