COURSE CURRICULUM

Acadia University’s Master of Arts in English is a research-intensive program designed to be completed primarily over one year. Courses are held in-person on campus, fostering close interaction with faculty and fellow graduate students. The program emphasizes both independent research and the development of advanced scholarly skills necessary for critical analysis and academic writing.In the first term, students begin with the thesis course (ENGL 5960), working closely with a supervisor on their research project. Alongside the thesis, students take a course in scholarly methods (ENGL 5060), which provides essential tools and techniques for conducting rigorous literary research. To complement their studies, students select two elective courses (ENGL 5xx3), allowing them to tailor their program according to their interests and research focus.The second term continues with thesis work, emphasizing progress and refinement of the research. A second scholarly methods course (ENGL 5543) deepens students’ understanding of critical methodologies and theoretical frameworks. As in the first term, students take two more electives, broadening their academic exposure and supporting their specialized interests.During the third term, students complete their thesis (ENGL 5960), finalizing their research and preparing it for submission. This final phase allows for concentrated effort on writing and revisions, ensuring the production of a high-quality scholarly work.This structure balances coursework with independent research, enabling students to develop advanced expertise in literary studies. The program prepares graduates for doctoral studies, academic careers, or professional roles that require strong analytical, writing, and research skills.
