COURSE CURRICULUM
The first year of the engineering program is designed to give students a strong foundation in both the core sciences and the principles of engineering design and analysis. In the first semester, students take Introduction to Engineering (APSC 1073) along with its lab component (APSC 1070L), which introduces the fundamentals of engineering practice, problem-solving, and teamwork. Design 1 (APSC 1223) builds on this by focusing on the engineering design process, giving students their first experience with turning ideas into workable solutions. To support this technical learning, students also take General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1013), Introductory Calculus 1 (MATH 1013), and Introductory Physics 1 (PHYS 1013), providing a comprehensive scientific background that is essential for future engineering courses. In the second semester, the curriculum shifts toward more analytical and computational topics. Statics (APSC 1113) introduces the study of forces and equilibrium, a cornerstone of mechanical and structural engineering. Computer Programming (APSC 1413) equips students with essential coding skills for modeling and solving engineering problems. Students also continue with General Chemistry 2 (CHEM 1023), Introductory Calculus 2 (MATH 1023), and Introductory Physics 2 (PHYS 1023), deepening their understanding of chemical reactions, mathematical techniques, and physical systems. For students in the CAS stream, Matrix Algebra (MATH 1323) adds another layer of mathematical rigor, supporting future coursework in areas like electrical and systems engineering. This first-year curriculum balances theory with practical application, encouraging students to think critically, work collaboratively, and begin developing the mindset of an engineer. By the end of the year, students have not only built a strong academic base but also gained exposure to the creative and problem-solving aspects of engineering that they will continue to explore in more depth throughout the program.
