COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the chemistry program at Acadia University is designed to provide a strong foundation in the core sciences, while also allowing students to explore individual interests through elective courses. In the first semester, students begin with Introductory Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1113), which introduces the basic principles of chemical structure, bonding, and reactions. This is supported by Introductory Calculus 1 (MATH 1013), providing essential mathematical tools used throughout chemistry and related disciplines. Students also take Introductory Physics 1 (PHYS 1013), which covers foundational topics such as motion, force, and energy—important for understanding physical chemistry and materials science. Two elective courses offer students the flexibility to explore subjects outside the core curriculum, such as arts, languages, computer science, or biology, depending on their academic goals and interests. In the second semester, students continue with Introductory Chemistry 2 (CHEM 1123), which builds on the concepts from the first term, focusing on chemical kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics. They also take Introductory Calculus 2 (MATH 1023) and Introductory Physics 2 (PHYS 1023), which extend their understanding of mathematical and physical concepts and how they apply to chemical systems. Again, two elective courses allow for customization of the academic experience. This balanced combination of chemistry, mathematics, and physics equips students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation that supports more advanced study in later years. The first-year structure also encourages students to begin thinking about research, professional pathways, and specializations within the field. Whether aiming for a future in scientific research, health sciences, or industry, students leave their first year prepared for the rigors of upper-year chemistry and ready to take advantage of Acadia’s many academic and experiential learning opportunities.
