COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of Acadia University’s biology program provides students with a strong academic foundation in the life sciences, while also offering flexibility to explore other interests through elective courses. In the first semester, students take Organisms and Their Environment 1 (BIOL 1113) along with its accompanying lab (BIOL 1110L), which introduces fundamental concepts in biology, including ecosystems, biodiversity, and organism interactions. This is paired with Fundamental Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1013) and its lab (CHEM 1010L), offering a solid introduction to chemical principles that are essential to understanding biological processes. Students also complete Statistics 1 (MATH 1253) and its lab (MATH 1250L), which provides the tools to analyze scientific data and interpret research findings. Two open electives allow students to begin tailoring their academic path, whether by exploring another science, pursuing an interest in the arts or social sciences, or adding relevant skills like communication or computer science. In the second semester, students continue with Organisms and Their Environment 2 (BIOL 1123 and BIOL 1120L) and Fundamental Chemistry 2 (CHEM 1023 and CHEM 1020L), building on the scientific knowledge and lab skills developed in the first term. The second semester also includes three electives, offering even more opportunity for students to explore different disciplines or begin shaping a specialized focus within biology. This balance of required courses and electives encourages interdisciplinary learning and allows students to discover how biology connects with broader academic and real-world contexts. Throughout the year, hands-on lab work and the option to engage with field-based experiences help students deepen their understanding of biological science. By the end of the first year, students are well-prepared for more advanced courses and research opportunities, with a strong foundation in both theory and practical skills.
