COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of Acadia University’s Bioscience program provides a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and business, setting the stage for more advanced study and industry experience in later years. In the first semester, students take Organisms and Their Environment 1 (BIOL 1113) along with its associated lab (BIOL 1110L), which introduces key concepts in ecology and biological systems. Fundamental Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1013) and its lab component (CHEM 1010L) develop core chemical principles essential to bioscience. Statistics 1 (MATH 1253) with its lab (MATH 1250L) equips students with the quantitative skills needed to analyze scientific data. Rounding out the semester, students choose a business elective (BUSI xxx3) and an arts elective (ELECTIVE xxx3) to broaden their academic perspective and begin developing valuable interdisciplinary skills. The second semester builds on this foundation with Organisms and Their Environment 2 (BIOL 1123 and BIOL 1120L), offering continued study of biological processes and environmental interactions. Students also progress to Fundamental Chemistry 2 (CHEM 1023 and CHEM 1020L), deepening their understanding of chemical reactions and molecular structure. Another business elective (BUSI xxx3) is included to support career readiness in the bioscience industry. The second semester also allows for more academic flexibility through two additional electives (ELECTIVE xxx3), including one completely open-choice course, which lets students explore interests in arts, sciences, or other areas. This balanced first-year curriculum not only builds scientific and analytical knowledge but also encourages students to think broadly and creatively, preparing them for the hands-on learning, co-op placements, and research experiences that follow in later years. Through both structured and flexible course options, students begin to shape their academic path while gaining exposure to the diverse elements of bioscience, business, and interdisciplinary thinking that define Acadia’s program.
