COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of study at the F.C. Manning School of Business Administration is carefully designed to give students a well-rounded introduction to key areas of business and economics. The required courses provide a strong academic foundation while also helping students build essential skills for success in both upper-year courses and professional environments. Students begin with Financial Accounting 1 (BUSI 1013), which introduces the principles of financial reporting and the fundamentals of accounting. Introduction to Business (BUSI 1703) offers an overview of business functions and practices, giving students a broad understanding of the field. Communication 1 (COMM 1213) focuses on effective business writing and presentation skills, essential for working in teams and leading projects. Students also take Microeconomic Principles (ECON 1013) and Macroeconomic Principles (ECON 1023), which provide insight into economic systems, market behavior, and national economic policy. Empirical Analysis of Economics and Business 1 (ECON 2613) introduces students to data analysis techniques and quantitative methods used in business research and decision-making. In addition, students take General Linear Algebra and Calculus for Business and Economics (MATH 1613), which supports problem-solving and analytical thinking across business disciplines. Alongside these core courses, students choose three electives that allow them to explore other areas of interest, broaden their perspectives, or begin shaping a specialization. These elective choices provide flexibility and the opportunity to tailor the first-year experience to individual goals and interests. Whether students are drawn to global business, entrepreneurship, or the financial sector, the first-year curriculum helps them build the foundational knowledge and versatile skill set needed to succeed in today’s fast-paced business world. With a balanced mix of theoretical learning and practical application, the program prepares students to confidently move into more advanced business studies in their second year and beyond.
