COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of Acadia University’s School of Music, students follow a structured core curriculum designed to build a solid musical foundation. The School of Music pre-registers all first-year students in their required core courses, ensuring a cohesive and supportive learning environment. The Music Core includes a diverse mix of courses such as MUSI 1273/83 Music through the Ages, which explores musical development over time, and MUSI 1563 Music and the Mind, which examines the psychological and cognitive aspects of music. Applied performance training is provided through MUSI 16XX Applied Lessons, while MUSI 1693 Playing and Hearing Music develops aural and practical musicianship. Keyboard proficiency is addressed in MUSI 1813 Comprehensive Keyboard, and ensemble experience is gained in MUSI 1600 First Year Chorus. Students also earn credit for concert attendance through MUSI 2870 Concert Credit and learn essential practice techniques in MUSI 1823 Practising. In addition to the music-focused curriculum, students are required to enroll in 6 credit-hours of electives in either English or History, which can be fulfilled by taking two one-term courses or one full-year course. This blend of rigorous music training and liberal arts study helps students grow into well-rounded, adaptable musicians prepared for various career paths.
